Turkish Cypriots refute allegations about rejecting UN proposal for new solution

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) refuted allegations from Greek Cypriot media regarding a supposed "U.N. proposal for a new solution."

According to the TRNC, there was no official meeting proposal communicated by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The Foreign Ministry dismissed claims made in Greek Cypriot media suggesting that Guterres had presented a "new solution" proposal in Cyprus, which was allegedly rejected by the Turkish side, leading to changes in the demanded conditions and a departure from the two-state solution.

The ministry's statement accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of spreading false information in the media about the "National Council meeting of the Greek Cypriot Administration," aiming to portray themselves as the "demanding party" on the Cyprus issue.

Furthermore, the statement clarified that apart from the ongoing process led by the Personal Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar in Cyprus, no other work has been conducted.

'Greek Cypriot leadership's imagination'

Addressing claims from Greek Cypriot media that the Turkish side only advocates for "sovereign equality" instead of a two-state solution, the statement dismissed these as mere products of the Greek Cypriot leadership's imagination.

It stressed that asserting the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side is crucial for formal negotiations.

The statement emphasized that since the U.N. Secretary-General did not provide an official meeting proposal, any claims that Turkish Cypriots rejected unofficial tripartite or five-party conference proposals suggested by the U.N. while the Greek Cypriot side accepted them are unfounded.
