Turkish Coast Guard intercepts 39 irregular migrants attempting to reach Greek island

In an operation off the Turkish coast of Ayvalık, Balıkesir, authorities intercepted a group of 39 irregular migrants who were attempting to reach the Greek island of Lesvos illegally on Friday.

The Coast Guard Command received intelligence about the presence of a rubber boat carrying irregular migrants in the waters near Ayvalık. Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard deployed the vessel "KB-115" to the area.

This incident comes after Türkiye conducted a major operation known as "KALKAN-19," resulting in the apprehension of 1,177 irregular migrants

Upon locating the rubber boat navigating in the Aegean Sea, the Coast Guard team successfully apprehended all 39 irregular migrants, among whom 17 were children.

The intercepted migrants were transported to the Coast Guard Command on Cunda Island. Upon arrival, they were provided with essential humanitarian aid including food, beverages, medicine, and medical supplies. Following the aid provision, the migrants were transferred to the Provincial Directorate of Immigration.

The interception marks another instance in the ongoing efforts by authorities to tackle illegal migration across the Aegean Sea. The Coast Guard remains vigilant in its mission to maintain maritime security and uphold border integrity.

Local authorities continue to collaborate closely with relevant agencies to address the challenges posed by irregular migration while ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
