Mexican leader slams US over human rights violations

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador condemned the treatment of pro-Palestinian protesters on university campuses by U.S. police, calling it a violation of human rights.

During a daily press briefing at the National Palace, Obrador slammed the inconsistency between the U.S. claim of global commitment to human rights and its harsh response to protests on university campuses.

Obrador pointed to the ongoing protests at U.S. universities, questioning the U.S.'s stance on human rights and highlighting the aggressive treatment of students and journalists participating in these protests.

Describing the situation as "very serious," Obrador called on the U.S. to reflect on its actions.

"If you are a judge of human rights in the world, then you need to be much bolder. Have you seen what happens to students who organize protests in universities?

Have you seen how they are being treated? The same goes for journalists. This is a very grave situation," he said.

Concern about financial priorities in the region

Besides criticizing the treatment of protesters, Obrador expressed concern about U.S. financial priorities.

He denounced the transfer of billions of dollars to countries such as Israel or Ukraine instead of addressing pressing issues in the region, such as the migration crisis.

"Instead of dealing with the growing migration crisis in the region, Washington is pouring billions of dollars into Israel or Ukraine," he commented.

He also wanted to reform Mexico's foreign policy, urging the U.S. to respect his sovereignty and advocating a more egalitarian approach to global affairs.
