Turkey launches campaign to help coup attempt victims

The government marshaled all of its resources to help the victims but there was an enormous outpouring from Turks who wanted to personally provide assistance, the ministry said in an announcement late Sunday that was published in the Official Gazette.

Financial donations to the Solidarity Campaign can be deposited to a number of bank accounts listed in the statement.

The deadly coup attempt July 15 occurred when rogue elements in the Turkish military tried to overthrow the country's democratically-elected government.

Turkey's government said followers of U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen organized the plot that martyred at least 246 people and injured more than 2,100 others.

Gulen is also accused of a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the “parallel state”.
