Turkey’s International Bosphorus Film Festival kicks off

More than 180 films to be screened in various Istanbul theaters free of charge during the festival.

The second International Bosphorus Film Festival has started on Friday at Istanbul’s CRR Concert Hall.

The event kicked off with American filmmaker Sam French’s 2012-Academy Award nominated short film, Buzkashi Boys.

The Anadolu Agency is one of the main sponsors of the festival.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, festival director Kamil Koc said that they want to bring the Turkish film industry to the global stage.

Referring to inspired Turkish filmmakers in the country, Koc added: “We started this project last year thinking about how we can activate the potential of the Turkish film industry.”    

Organized by the Bogazici Cinema Association and Istanbul Media Academy, the festival aims to boost the Turkish cinema industry while financially supporting young film directors and producers.

The grand prize of the festival is 50,000 Turkish Lira ($22,000).

Workshops, panels and discussions on cinema will also be organized during the festival which will run until Nov. 28.

More than 180 films will be screened free of charge in various theaters across Istanbul, including: Atlas, Cine Majestik, Baglarbasi Culture Center, Tarik Zafer Tunaya Culture Center and Tophane-i Amire.
