Lithuanian President Grybauskaite meets newly appointed Swedish PM

The Baltic and Nordic countries need coordinated action focusing on information and energy security to enhance the geopolitical situation in the Baltic region, the Lithuanian President said on Tuesday.

Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite met with the newly appointed Swedish PM on Tuesday when they discussed the security situation in the region, the implementation of common energy projects and cooperation in international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations, according to Lithuania's Presidency.

"Sweden has always been Lithuania’s reliable partner with whom we are bound by common political interests and close economic ties," Grybauskaite said.

She said that the two countries hold the same position on many issues and share similar views on energy security for the Baltic and Nordic region.

Sweden and Lithuania are important energy partners with each other. The NordBalt power link between the two countries, is planned to be operational at the end of 2015. The power link will connect Lithuanian and Nordic power transmission systems.

Nordic and Baltic countries aim to increase their energy independency with this project.
