An Italian national who arrived at Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport last week from Nigeria with symptoms of the Ebola virus is not carrying the deadly virus but suffering from malaria, the Turkish Health Ministry confirmed.

The 23-year-old woman was immediately quarantined and transferred to a nearby hospital upon landing as she was complaining of high fever and vomiting.

"The medical examination on the patient, who was segregated after arriving on a Turkish Airlines flight from Nigeria to Istanbul showing Ebola symptoms, has been completed and she tested negative for the virus," the ministry said in a written statement.

"The patient will be discharged following the completion of her treatment Tuesday and is expected to depart for Italy," the statement said.

Ebola – a form of hemorrhagic fever and contagious disease for which there is no known treatment or cure – has claimed over 1,000 lives in West Africa since the latest outbreak in February.

Most of the deaths were registered in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Five fatalities have also been confirmed in Nigeria.

The tropical fever, which first appeared in 1976 in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected animals or people.

WHO describes the Ebola virus disease, which has a fatality case as up to 90 percent, as "one of the most virulent".

Doctors say common symptoms of Ebola include high fever and headaches, followed by vomiting and internal and external bleeding.
