Turkish assembly awaits Erdogan's swearing-in as 12th president
When Recep Tayyip Erdogan is sworn in as the Republic of Turkey's 12th president Thursday it will mark his further consolidation of power after 11 years as prime minister.

Erdogan will swear his oath of office at the Turkish Grand National Assembly at 2 p.m. local time (12.00 GMT) during an extraordinary session convened by Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek.

With the country’s lawmakers watching, Erdogan will take the presidential oath as set out in Article 103 of the Turkish constitution.

"In my capacity as president I swear upon my honor and integrity before the Turkish Grand National Assembly and before history to safeguard the existence and independence of the State, the indivisible integrity of the country and the nation and the absolute sovereignty of the nation; to abide by the constitution, the rule of law, democracy, the principles of the secular Republic; not to deviate from the ideal according to which everyone is entitled to enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms under conditions of national peace and prosperity and in the spirit of national solidarity and justice; and do my utmost to preserve and exalt the glory and honor of the Republic of Turkey and perform without bias the functions that I have assumed."

Foreign guests, including president and ambassadors, will meet the new president at his official residence, the Cankaya Palace.

Erdogan's family will follow the oath-taking ceremony from the assembly's lodge.

The new president and his wife Emine will be welcomed by his predecessor, Abdullah Gul, and his wife, Hayrunnisa, at the palace before making a trip to the Anitkabir mausoleum to pay tribute to Turkey’s first president and founder of the modern republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was expected Wednesday to be confirmed as the chairman by delegates of the ruling Justice and Development Party, and his predecessor, Erdogan, will appoint Davutoglu as prime minister to form Turkey's 62nd Cabinet. Erdogan said earlier Wednesday that the new government will be in place Friday.
