The number of Turkish subscribers to third generation of mobile telecommunications technology increased by 16.3 percent in this year's first quarter, according to a Turkish national telecommunications regulatory authority.

Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority stated the number of mobile 3G users in this year’s first quarter reached 51.2 million, increasing 16.3 percent compared to the same period of last year.

Last year 43.8 million Turks used 3G services.

Meanwhile, the number of mobile broadband subscribers using 3G internet services on tablets and mobile phones reached 26.4 million in the first quarter, compared to 20.7 million subscribers in the same period last year.

The number of postpaid mobile broadband users was 12,456,000, while 13,987,000 Turks were prepaid mobile broadband subscribers during January to March this year.

Turkey started offering 3G services in July 2009 and offers high-speed internet via GSM networks.

3G subscribers have the opportunity to make video calls, watch television programs, download music or play online games on devices supporting the services.
