TV market in China is seeking international content

Charles Zhang, CEO and chairman of the board at leading video platform Sohu.com stated during his Media Mastermind Keynote at MIPCOM 2014 that China awaits digital TV content, given the increasing number of internet users that is estimated between 600-700 million users.

TV market in China is seeking international content
International content owners must now see China as a growing market and should begin targeting this region as traditional TV is tightly regulated and internet based platforms provide the freedom of users to choose what they want to watch.

This is a reason internet users are watching television content online, mainly big US and Korean TV series such as Z Nation, The Strain, Homeland and Prison Break.

The video platform Sohu.com hosts about 500 million views per day and Zhang noted that the platform was based around ad revenue because there was no convenience on doing a micropayment system, but this is rapidly changing and Chinese market is now willing to pay for what they want to watch.

One of the problems that have kept content owners out of China is the fear of piracy, but Zhang mentioned this issue is being put to an end, although it’s virtually impossible tocompletely eradicate piracy, it’s now been 95% resolved.

Numbers presented by Sohu’s CEO showed a huge increase in views and stated that the future is very positive and is a major opportunity for TV content providers to make their way into Chinese market.
