The number of Syrian refugee children in Turkey exceeds 379,792 according to Turkey's emergency management agency, AFAD, while Turkey celebrates the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced that 111,000 Syrian refugee children are under the age of five while the number of Syrian refugee children taking shelter in camps in Turkey reached around 120,000. According to AFAD data, of approximately the 69,000 Syrian children who live in Turkey’s camps, the majority are able to go to school and receive an education from the Turkish government. International organizations such as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and AFAD attempt to draw the world's attention to the damage inflicted on children from the Syrian civil war.

According to a UNICEF report that was released on its website, “nearly 6.5 million people have been displaced and are struggling to survive in increasingly desperate conditions and 4.27 million children have been directly affected by the crisis. Children who have been exposed to the horrors of war and have witnessed unspeakable cruelties are suffering from psychological distress. Children are paying the heaviest price."

The report also cites that close to 2.3 million boys and girls in Syria are still out of school or are at risk of dropping out of school. The lack of access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation, combined with deteriorating food security, is raising serious concerns about the nutritional status of children.

"Over 200,000 children under five may be at risk of malnutrition, the collapsing healthcare and water systems are exposing children to infectious diseases. In November 2013, Syria confirmed 17 cases of wild poliovirus, the first confirmed cases since 1999," the report states.

According to United Nations High Commissioner data, 59,596 Syrian refugee children live in Egypt, 90,247 children are in Iraq, 310,820 in Jordan, 537,633 in Lebanon and 379,792 children live in Turkey.

However, around 220,000 Syrian refugee children are participating in Turkey's April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day celebrations in the south central province of Gaziantep, today.

AFAD made a video, “Seeking Hope in Exile” that shows the conditions and the daily lives of Syrian refugee children in the Turkish camps from the child's point of view.
