French PM to unveil new cabinet in search of solving political crisis

Facing opposition from his ruling Socialist Party, President Hollande may be forced to call for the dissolution of the parliament and snap elections.

French PM to unveil new cabinet in search of solving political crisis
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls is due to announce a new cabinet Tuesday, one day after the unexpected resignation of his government after three "rebel" ministers left their offices.

Valls’s four-month-old government collapsed Monday leaving President Francois Hollande to request the formation of a new cabinet -- his third in just over two years in power.

A new government is to be formed in line with "the direction that President Hollande has defined for our country," read a statement Tuesday from the president's residence, the Elysee.

French Economy Minister Arnaud Montebourg's outspoken criticism Monday over economic policies based on austerity and cuts was the last straw that led the government to resign. He called on both Prime Minister Valls and President Hollande for a 'major' policy change. Montebourg hailed his "freedom" as he left office.

Earlier on Sunday, the 51-year-old outspokenly criticized Germany's austerity measures and warned France that they would no longer "be pushed around" by the EU's economic powerhouse.

Both the Minister of Education Benoit Hamon and Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti, who openly supported Montebourg's call for economic policy change, announced they are not interested in taking part in a new government.

There is speculation, however, that Justice Minister Christiane Taubira who also backed Montebourg, would remain on in her position or take the culture minister's position.

As it remains unclear who will be in or out, the new cabinet reshuffle was reflected on Tuesday's French press headlines.

Headlines which ran "Regime crisis", "The last chance for Hollande", "What a spectacle," "Valls changes government to rid political crises," all spoke about a dramatic political crisis which looms for the future with the possibility of Hollande facing the dissolution of parliament and the calling for snap elections if Valls's new Cabinet fails to get the backing of the Socialist Party lawmakers.
