Largest Scottish city votes 'Yes,' but 'No's in lead
The “Yes” campaign has won the largest city in Scotland, although those voting "No" to independence from the United Kingdom remain in the lead in the country's referendum.

Those voting for independence took 53 percent of the vote with the opposition Better together campaign at 47 percent. The total number of votes was 364,664, a 75 percent turnout.

Glasgow is seen as one of the most significant cities because of its large population. However, the “Yes” campaign required a larger majority to be able to take an overall lead.

At 5.30 a.m. BST Friday, the total vote stands at 1,397,077 against Scotland leaving the United Kingdom, to 1,176,952 for the independence campaign with 26 of 32 regions having declared their results. The "Yes" campaign has won 4 regions to the no campaigns 22.

The results for the capital Edinburgh are yet to be announced.

Polling stations closed their doors at 10 p.m. BST Thursday, having been open for 15 hours to allow the people of Scotland to decide if their country continues to exist alongside England, Northern Ireland and Wales in the United Kingdom.

Soon after closing, a YouGov poll suggested that those saying "No" to independence were at 54 percent, while "Yes" voters were at 46 percent.

Other counts are ongoing. With 4,285,323 people registered to vote - 97 percent of the electorate - turn out was expected to be a record high in Scotland.

From 2 a.m. Friday morning, 32 local authorities started to present their results to the chief counting officer Mary Pitcaithly in Edinburgh, who is expected to declare the final result later in the morning.
