Israel threatens Gaza-like scenario after Shebaa attack

The attack comes ten days after Hezbollah accused Israel of killing six of its fighters – along with six Iranians – in a drone strike in the Syrian town of Quneitra.

Israel threatens Gaza-like scenario after Shebaa attack
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday implicitly threatened to take military action along the country's northern border, saying that any group that sought to challenge Israel should learn a lesson from the embattled Gaza Strip.

"Everyone who is trying to challenge us in the northern borders, I recommend them to look what happened near from here in Gaza," Netanyahu said, according to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The Israeli army, for its part, closed the airports in Rosh Pina and Haifa due to security concerns.

At least four Israeli troops were injured in the Shebaa Farms region on Wednesday when their vehicle was struck by anti-tank missiles fired from southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack

Hezbollah on Wednesday claimed responsibility for an attack on an Israeli military vehicle in Lebanon's Israeli-held Shebaa Farms region, which, it said, had killed several Israeli troops.

In a statement, the Shiite movement said that one of its units – dubbed the "Quneitra Martyrs' Group" – had attacked an Israeli military convoy, leaving several Israeli troops dead or injured.

Israeli media, for its part, reported that at least four Israeli troops had been injured in the Shebaa Farms region when their vehicle was struck by anti-tank missiles.

According to a Lebanese security source, Hezbollah carried out the "daring operation" in response to a drone strike carried out earlier this month in the Syrian town of Quneitra that left six Hezbollah fighters dead.

"Since Tuesday, the group has evacuated its positions in southern Beirut, its primary stronghold," the source said.

Wednesday's missile attack comes ten days after Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out the deadly drone strike in Quneitra.

Israel army confirms 'casualties' in Shebaa attack

The Israeli army has confirmed that Wednesday's attack by Hezbollah on Israeli military vehicles in Lebanon's Shebaa Farms region had caused "several casualties."

"In attack against [Israeli army] vehicles near Har Dov [Shebaa Farms], we have confirmed that there are several casualties," Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner said on Twitter on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Lerner has dismissed reports that an Israeli soldier was abducted during an attack by Hezbollah on troops in Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms region.

"The rumor of abduction has been ruled out," Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner said on Twitter.
