US-drafted Gaza cease-fire resolution vetoed in UN Security Council

Despite intense deliberations and urgent appeals, the U.N. Security Council did not pass the pivotal U.S.-drafted resolution calling for an "immediate and sustained ceasefire" in Gaza following vetoes.

Russia and China vetoed the resolution at the Security Council on a cease-fire in Gaza, with Moscow accusing Washington of a "hypocritical spectacle" that does not pressure Israel.

The rejection of this resolution marks a critical moment in the international efforts to address the escalating crisis in Gaza.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield had actively addressed the council, emphasizing the urgent need for a cease-fire to facilitate humanitarian aid.

"We want to see an immediate and sustained cease-fire that can allow a much more sustained entrance of humanitarian aid," she stated.

Thomas-Greenfield acknowledged the challenges in diplomatic negotiations and asserted the importance of practical implementation: "A U.N. resolution means much less if it cannot be implemented on the ground; that’s why the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt are working around the clock."

Despite her efforts to rally support, including stating, "We believe we’re close, but we’re not there yet," the resolution faced decisive opposition.

In her call for consensus, Thomas-Greenfield had urged, “I urge all Security Council members to vote yes.” She had also stressed the resolution's critical stance against Hamas, condemning its "horrific attacks and sexual violence" and the importance of protecting civilians on both sides.

However, the vetoes from Russia and China have prevented the adoption of the resolution, reflecting the deep divisions within the Security Council on the approach to the Gaza crisis.

This outcome leaves the international community grappling with how to effectively respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work toward a sustainable peace in the region.
