10 killed, 5 wounded in Kabul suicide car bombing

At least 10 people were killed and 5 others wounded on Saturday when an explosive-laden car rammed into a military vehicle in the capital Kabul. A car laden with explosives was being tracked by the security forces, Kabul Police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanakzai told AA. He said Afghan National Army soldiers and policemen were among the dead. "As they stopped it at a checkpoint, the driver tried to run away," Stanakzai told AA. "The car came under fire by the police and then there was a big explosion," he added. The explosion occurred at 3:15 p.m. in front of the Burhanudin Rabbani University of Literature in the 5th police station area of the capital. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but most suicide attacks are carried out by the Taliban insurgents. The blast took place about 300 meters from the highly-secured Loya Girga tent, where the consultative grand council is going to be convened on Thursday. Hundreds of representatives from across Afghanistan are going to huddle together to decide the fate of a proposed security agreement between Afghanistan and the US. The deal allows long-term deployment by American troops after the withdrawal of the US-led foreign forces in 2014. The major point of contention during the Loya Girga meeting will be Washington's demand for legal impunity for its troops against persecution. US-led coalition and NATO forces have been deployed in the country since they ousted the Taliban regime in 2001.
