Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz: 'TANAP to widen Turkey’s energy borders'
The Southern Gas Corridor project will widen Turkey’s energy borders to achieve prosperity, the Turkish Energy Minister said on Wednesday.

Turkey has strengthened its energy position by buying more stakes in the Shah Deniz field in Azerbaijan and in the country's plans to administer more pipeline projects, Yildiz said at the Energy Supply Security and Southern Gas Corridor Panel.

The Southern Gas Corridor is planned as an alternative energy supply to Europe, which will transport Caspian gas to European countries via Turkey.

The Trans Anatolian Pipeline Project, known as TANAP, will provide gas flow from Azerbaijan, and is aimed at reducing Europe’s dependency on Russian gas.

“Turkey has become the second biggest partner of the Shah Deniz field with a 19 percent share for over 50 years,” Yildiz said, adding that Turkey gained $265 million in 2013, and next year will see a further increase.

"This is an investment in Turkey’s future. We are making efforts to become closer to EU standards in average electricity consumption,” he said.

The pipeline supply agreement for TANAP was signed Tuesday, granting 80 percent of the project's construction to Turkish firms. The pipeline is expected to become active in 2018.

Yildiz said there is no neighboring country left that is not connected to Turkey with electricity lines. He further made reference to the fact that Turkey never cut electricity transmission to Syria and the lines continued to serve the people during an important time frame.

“We never approved Syrian regime’s inhumane actions. But the electricity lines have remained significant," he said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also highlighted the importance of TANAP as a peace project.

Davutoglu, speaking on Tuesday in Ankara during the signing ceremony of a pipeline supply agreement for TANAP, said relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are vital both geographically and in terms of energy potential for both countries.
