Greece to make next payment on bailout loans

Varoufakis tells Lagarde that next €450 million payment for the IMF will be made on Tuesday

Greece to make next payment on bailout loans
Greece will make the next payment due to the International Monetary Fund under the bailout plan on Tuesday, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Sunday.

At an Easter Sunday meeting with IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, Varoufakis said that the €450 ($494.3 million) payment due under terms made in the bailout plan of 2010 -- by the previous Greek government -- would be made as scheduled on April 9, in a statement to the press issued after the meeting.

Greece owes the IMF payments of about €9 billion ($9.89 billion) this year, and while the Greek government would like to reschedule these payments, the IMF has so far declined to do so.

Lagarde said in the statement that it was in the interest of all parties to continue cooperating, and that uncertainty was of no help to anyone.

Separately, the Greek government has submitted a new list of economic reforms to its European creditors, in an effort to obtain the next €7.2 billion ($7.9 billion) tranche of the bailout.

Meetings will begin on Monday in Brussels to consider the latest list of reforms -- thus far, those that the Greek government has submitted have not been found acceptable.
