Antalya’s ‘Russian brides’ compete to make Turkish coffee

The competition was held as a part of 'Russia-Turkey friendship' themed event organized by the Culture and Life Center (MAYDER) of Antalya's Manavgat district.

The event kicked off first with a film screening explaining the history of coffee up until now. After that, dance of Sufi whirling dervishes took place, accompanied by ney, an end-blown reed flute, which plays a primary role in the music of Sufi rites (sama).

The event closed with the coffee competition, with 'Russian brides' – who decided to live in Turkey after marrying Turkish men – taking the stage in groups of five to show to their skills in Turkish coffee making. 

As the women were waiting for the results, the Manavgat district governor, Nazmi Günlü, one of the jury members told them that they had a difficult time picking 'the best coffee maker' as all of the contestants had done a very good job. The governor said, all the competitors came first in the contest, after which the winners were given various presents.
