The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has announced a $14.4 million investment to enhance its ability to produce germanium substrates for solar cells. This initiative is part of the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) Program.

DoD has announced its partnership with 5N+ Semiconductors (5N Semi) to carry out this project. The statement highlights the project's alignment with the 2024 National Defense Industrial Strategy, emphasizing the importance of bolstering domestic production and resilient supply chains.

The strategy emphasizes four essential areas for developing a modernized defense industry ecosystem in the coming three to five years. These areas encompass a range of crucial factors, such as adaptable supply chains, workforce preparedness, adaptable purchasing strategies, and the ability to deter economic challenges.

According to sector experts, this area is receiving growing attention in the United States due to China's rapid advancements in space-based capabilities.
