Five people who were displaced by Boko Haram attacks have died following cholera outbreak at an Internally Displaced Persons( IDPs) camp in about 189 kilometers from Maiduguri, the provincial capital of Nigeria's restive northeast Borno State.
"The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated the Agency's Search and Rescue Epidemic Response plan at the camp," Abdulkadir Ibrahim, spokesman for NEMA's northeast zone, said in a statement Saturday.
"Additional staff from the Agency and doctors from Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF) have been dispatched to assist the Red Cross officials and other stakeholders at the camp clinics," he added.
Ibrahim said the cholera outbreak led to the death of five people, including children.
Boko Haram fighters had recently attacked Damboa town and some communities in the area, killing over 25 people and wounding more than 30 others.
The insurgents also burnt down several houses.
The attack came barely two weeks after Boko Haram sacked a military base in the area, forcing thousands of residents to flee.
NEMA said over 15,000 residents of the area who were displaced after the Boko Haram attacks camped at Biu, about 89 kilometers from Damboa.
It regretted that the lack of toilet facilities and proper hygiene among the displaced led to outbreak of cholera.
Ibrahim said MSF has donated some drugs and disinfectants to complement the drugs already provided by the NEMA and other donors.
