"And the fact that it is a handful of people, who call themselves Republicans, that are holding back the Republicans and the Democrats. [...] They have found a way, with [a limited number of votes], to close down the United States government,” said the senior Democrat from New York. Congressman Rangel has served in the US Congress for over 40 years, and currently sits on the House's Ways and Means Committee, which originates US tax code. His statement follows weeks of wrangling between the US House of Representatives and the Senate, which resulted in the government shutting down after both houses could not agree on a budget. The congressman added that the effects of the shutdown would be acutely felt by America’s poor. "The shutdown is painful to all Americans. It’s true that the affluent are more comfortable. And it’s abundantly clear that the poor and the middle class will continue to suffer," he said. Still, he said an end to the current crisis would not be reached if Americans do not speak out. "If big business, and spiritual leaders, and America can tolerate this, those people over there, that are very comfortable, will continue to do harm to the United States in order to satisfy what they know they can’t accomplish, and that is, to embarrass the president of the United States of America," said Mr Rangel.
