Presidential candidate and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cast his vote in Turkey's presidential election.

After going to the polls with his family in Istanbul's Uskudar province on Sunday, Erdogan said the Turkish nation was making a significant decision on its future with the election.

"This decision bears a great importance for carrying Turkey to its future goals in 2023, 2053 and 2071, by means of the cooperation between an elected president and an elected government," the leader of ruling AK Party added.

More than 53 million eligible voters are expected to vote in Turkey's first directly elected presidential poll as three candidates run for the post.

Erdogan will compete with his main challenger, joint opposition candidate Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu - the former general secretary of the Organization of Islamic Conference - and the Peoples' Democracy Party's candidate Selahattin Demirtas.
