Greek Defence Minister hails Erdogan's presidency and leadership
The Greek Defence Minister has hailed the election of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan as Turkey's president - his friend of over twenty years.

“Being promoted to the presidency with his natural leadership and support of the Turkish people, Tayyip Erdogan has reached the climax of his political journey,” said Greek Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopulos.

“I wish Erdogan’s new position will be for the benefit of the Turkish people and will serve regional peace, cooperation, development and stability,” he said.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency reporter in Athens, Avramopulos said they became close when they became the mayors of Istanbul and Athens, and they are old friends.

Avramopulos had expressed his frankness last year during his meeting with Erdogan saying, “I cannot call you excellency, I am used to calling you Tayyip.”

As a statesman, Avramopulos has served in key government positions, such as the Athens mayor, foreign minister, tourism and development minister, health minister and defence minister.

The PM and president-elect Erdogan will be sworn in as Turkey’s 12th President on August 28.

According to the results of August 10 presidential election, outgoing PM Erdogan won by 51.79 percent of the vote while his rivals Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Selahattin Demirtas garnered 38.44 percent and 9.76 percent respectively.
