The EU on Friday extended economic sanctions relating to Russia’s annexation of Crimea for a further year.

According to a statement, the sanctions on business deals with the peninsula will run to June 23, 2017.

The ban - first applied in July 2014 following the Russian takeover of the Ukrainian territory - applies to investment in Crimea, exporting and importing goods to and from the region and involvement in tourism.

Wider sanctions applied over Russia’s involvement in the conflict in the eastern Ukraine are due be extended next week until the end of 2016.
