Brazil defeated Chile 3-2 on penalties in the first Round of 16 game played at Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte, on Saturday and advanced to quarter finals.

In the 18th minute, Brazilian center back David Luiz, who was assisted by his teammate Thiago Silva, pounced the ball into the the net from the corner kick whipped by Neymar, 1-0. The 27-year-old Paris Saint-Germain defender scored his first goal for Brazil.

Chile equalised in the 32nd minute when their star forward Alexis Sanchez benefited the mistake of Brazilian defence, 1-1.

In the 55th minute of the second half, a Brazil goal scored by Hulk was disallowed by the referee since he handballed before finding the net.

In the remaining time neither sides managed to score and the match went extra time.

In the last minute of the second extra time, Chilean forward Mauricio Pinilla's vicious drive hit the post and just a minute later Brazilian central midfielder Ramires' shot from outside the box went off target and the winner was set to be decided in a penalty shoot-out.

Having missed three penalties, Chile lost to Brazil 3-2 on penalties and got eliminated from 2014 FIFA World Cup in Round of 16.

Brazil's goalkeeper Julio Cesar has been elected man of the match after saving two penalties of Chile in the shoot-out.

Brazil will meet the winner of the match to be played between Colombia and Uruguay on Saturday night.

The hosts' defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo will miss the next match after getting booked in the second half of the game.
