FIFA ban of Suarez 'fascist' says Uruguayan president Mujica

Suarez was given a 4-month ban and a nine-match suspension after he bit an Italian opponent -- the Uruguayan player's third time getting caught biting a rival player -- during a World Cup game.

FIFA ban of Suarez 'fascist' says Uruguayan president Mujica
Uruguayan President Jose Mujica labeled as "fascist" the decision by FIFA, the world's football governing body, to ban Uruguayan star striker Luis Suarez from any football-related activity for 4 months after he bit an Italian player during a World Cup game last week.

The Uruguayan president also called FIFA officials "old sons of b…," according to a video uploaded on YouTube by journalist Sergio Gorzy.

Mujica proceeded to put the blame on the Italian style of play, saying that "Italians provoke and this time they went too far."

He added that far worse fouls and gestures had occurred on the field in this World Cup and accused FIFA of treating Uruguay 'differently' because it is a small country.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee punished Suarez with a four-month ban on all football activities, a nine-match international suspension as well as a $112,000 fine for biting Giorgio Chiellini on June 24 in the final moments of a critical match between Uruguay and Italy.

"Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," said the committee in a statement released on June 26.

Uruguay returned home after losing 2-0 to Colombia, in the Round of 16 on June 28, a match in which the 27-year-old Suarez could not compete.

Nevertheless, Suarez was welcomed as a hero in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, with the president himself praising him at the airport.

Mujica’s strong language against FIFA officials may, however, affect Uruguay’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup, a 100 years after the country hosted FIFA's first World Cup.
