Turkish AI-powered forest fire decision system nominated for global award

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli announced that the Artificial Intelligence-supported Decision-Support System used in combating forest fires has been nominated for the World Summit on the Information Society Awards.

The Decision-Support system used by the General Directorate of Forestry (OGM) to combat forest fires has been nominated for the World Summit on the Information Society Awards by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency.

Citizens can vote for the system via the link "https://www.itu.int/net4/wsis/stocktaking/" until March 31.

Registration is required to vote on the mentioned website. After registering, voting will be conducted for the "Forest Fires Support Decision System" on the competition page.

Voting will take place in 18 categories, and the projects receiving the most votes in each category will be awarded during a ceremony in Geneva from May 27 to 31.

Domestically developed AI system

The system, developed with local and national resources used by the OGM since 2022, features software that brings together many subsystems.

The Decision-Support System integrates meteorological data, Forest Information System data, UAV and satellite images.

The system enables the prediction of the probability of a forest fire based on meteorological data and provides forecasts regarding the cause of the fire.

If a fire breaks out, instant meteorological and geographical conditions are analyzed to determine the correct intervention method.

The artificial intelligence-supported system continuously analyzes changing conditions to predict the fire's real-time progression.

Based on these predictions, teams can intervene more effectively during fire incidents.

Considering the fire's progression, settlements that need to be evacuated can also be rescued on time.

The system continuously records current data, improving firefighting efforts.
