Germany expects no decision on Brexit deal at EU summit

German government does not expect at this week’s EU summit an agreement on “sticking points” in the Brexit negotiations, officials said on Tuesday.

EU leaders will be gathering in Brussels for a two-day summit starting Wednesday, which would focus on the U.K.'s exit talks from the 28-member bloc, issues of migration and internal security.

A senior German official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Berlin was not expecting a decision at the summit on Brexit, after negotiations between delegations broke up on Sunday without a deal.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is scheduled to address EU leaders on Wednesday evening on the state of the U.K.'s exit talks.

Afterwards, leaders of 27 member states and EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier will discuss the way forward in Brexit talks.

While the EU and the U.K. agreed on almost 90 percent of the agreement, Irish border issue remain the thorniest issue, according to diplomats.

The EU leaders are expected to hold an extraordinary Brexit summit in November if both sides could not reach an agreement.

The U.K. is set to leave the EU on March 29, 2019.
