The United States expressed deep concern regarding a video depicting Israeli forces shooting two seemingly unarmed Palestinians and subsequently burying them using a wheel loader, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated the "disturbing" footage deeply troubled them but emphasized the need for independent verification before concluding.
Miller pledged to gather additional information from the Israeli government swiftly.
"We anticipate a comprehensive investigation into this incident and, if warranted, the pursuit of accountability," the spokesperson said.
Miller reiterated the U.S. stance, emphasizing Israel's obligation to investigate credible allegations of violations of the laws of war, ensure appropriate accountability and implement measures to prevent future infractions.
The video depicts the victims walking in an open area along the Gazan coast, signaling surrender by waving a white fabric – a universally recognized symbol.
Although the timing of the incident remains undisclosed, the release of the footage follows closely on the heels of another video capturing an Israeli drone targeting and killing four Palestinians in Khan Younis through a series of strikes.
Meanwhile, the United States, as the primary provider of military aid to Israel, is evaluating Israel's conduct during the conflict in Gaza and potential breaches of international humanitarian law.
Under a memorandum signed by President Joe Biden on Feb. 8, countries receiving U.S. military assistance, including Israel, must assure Washington of compliance with international human rights and humanitarian law.
Earlier this week, Miller confirmed that Israel, alongside six other recipient countries – Colombia, Iraq, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and Ukraine – had furnished written assurances to the State Department.
Since an Oct.7 cross-border attack by Hamas, Israel has launched a deadly military offensive in Palestinian territories, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties.
The toll includes over 32,500 Palestinians killed and 75,000 injured amid widespread destruction and critical shortages.
