At the U.N. Security Council meeting held at the U.N. Headquarters in New York, the three permanent members, the United States, Russia and China, emphasized the importance of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in providing humanitarian aid in the region.

Russian Ambassador to the U.N., Vassily Nebenzia, underscored the indispensability of UNRWA's role in Gaza while addressing the Security Council. "We are aware of the indispensable role of UNRWA in the distribution of humanitarian aid and the continuity of care in Gaza," he stated.

Nebenzia highlighted that despite allegations regarding some members of the organization's connections with Hamas, no evidence has been presented.

The allegations of collaboration between some personnel and Hamas have led some donors to suspend funding for UNRWA, a move described as "unfathomable" by the Russian representative.

Despite the lack of clear evidence to substantiate the accusations against the 12 individuals, the Russian delegation categorically condemned efforts to discredit the organization through disinformation campaigns.

He emphasized the dedication of UNRWA personnel, acknowledging their heroism in carrying out humanitarian duties under inhumane conditions.

Nebenzia specifically mentioned the loss of 178 UNRWA staff members since Oct. 7 due to Israeli attacks, calling for appreciation of their sacrifices.

US to continue working with UNRWA for its continuation

Robert Wood, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the U.N., referred to UNRWA's "indispensable" role in delivering humanitarian aid in Gaza.

"The U.S. is seriously concerned about the significant food insecurity and the risk of impending famine. Reversing this situation is critically important for UNRWA," Wood stated.

"The U.S. remains committed to working with UNRWA, other donors, and the host to implement reforms necessary for UNRWA to remain operational as long as needed," Wood added.

China urges US to be fair

Remarks by Ambassador Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN, at the Security Council meeting on maintenance of international peace and security

Geng Shuang, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N., described UNRWA as the "backbone" of humanitarian intervention in Palestine.

He praised the dedication of UNRWA staff and warned against the consequences of terminating aid operations, stating that it would sever the lifeline for people in Gaza.

"They have worked tirelessly, sweat, shed blood and made the greatest sacrifices," Shuang stated.

Shuang emphasized the importance of impartial investigations into UNRWA, insisting that the investigation should not have a predetermined conclusion.

The Chinese official also called on Israel to immediately cease attacks and defamation and urged relevant countries to resume funding for UNRWA to assess possible solutions.

Additionally, he urged the United States to demonstrate fairness and sincere efforts in ensuring humanitarian aid access through all land crossings to Gaza.
