Qatar to support UN resolution on Srebrenica Genocide

The Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Qatar confirmed that Qatar will support the adoption of a resolution on the Srebrenica genocide at the U.N. General Assembly.

According to Bosnia and Herzegovina's Ambassador to Doha Semir Halilovic, Qatar will not co-sponsor the resolution but will vote “in favor” of it in the U.N. General Assembly, taking a position similar to that of Montenegro and several other countries around the world.

Yesterday's agreed text of the resolution recalls the genocide of Bosniaks in Srebrenica in July 1995. The resolution will be discussed in the U.N. General Assembly in early May.

The draft resolution advocates the recognition of July 11 as an international day of remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. The resolution condemns war crimes, crimes against humanity and acts glorifying the perpetrators of genocide, as established by international court decisions.

The resolution also aims to call on all states to fulfill their obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and to respect the relevant judgments of the International Court of Justice.

The resolution, proposed by Germany and Rwanda, has received co-sponsorship from influential Western countries, key Islamic countries and Southeast European countries. Among these countries is Türkiye.

Serbia, however, strongly opposes the resolution and is rallying support to dissuade UN. member states from voting in favor, relying in particular on the support of Russia, China and friendly states from Africa and South America.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, leader Milorad Dodik argue that the resolution unfairly imposes collective guilt on the Serbian people and deny that genocide took place in Srebrenica, despite international tribunal rulings to the contrary.
