Canada to designate Iranian Revolutionary Guards as terrorist group

The Canadian House of Commons unanimously supported a motion recommending the inclusion of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on the “list of terrorist organizations,” Canada's public broadcaster CBC reported.

During the vote, all members expressed their support for the motion drafted by the Justice Commission. However, it was noted that this motion is not legally binding for the government.

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, organizations that engage or attempt to engage in terrorist activities can be listed as terrorist groups if there are reasonable grounds to do so.

The United States designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2019 and there is speculation that the EU may follow suit.

Focus on the 2020 plane crash tragedy involving Canadian citizens. The tragic plane crash in 2020 that killed 80 Canadians has intensified calls in Canada to hold the IRGC accountable.

Speaking at a memorial ceremony for the victims of the crash, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government is committed to exploring ways to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 flight 752 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport to Kyiv on Jan. 8, 2020. All 176 passengers on board lost their lives.

Although Iranian officials initially denied the allegations of a missile attack, the Iranian General Staff later admitted that the plane was mistakenly hit by two missiles fired by air defense systems due to human error during heightened tensions following the assassination of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

A few hours before the downing of the plane, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps had launched a missile attack on U.S. bases in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Soleimani.
