UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on Iraqi government to investigate the “tragic incidents” that took place in Camp Ashraf where 47 people were killed, and disclose the findings. Ban expressed his deepest sorrow in a UN statement and extended his condolences to victims’ families. Ban also appealed for urgent restoration of security in the camp as it is the responsibility of the Government of Iraq to ensure the safety and security of the residents. The statement further said that Iraqi officials reported that medical aid had been provided in the camp and United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) would send a team of investigators to see what happened in the camp. Most of the residents of Camp Ashraf – home to Iranian opposition – were transferred to another camp before the incidents.
