At least 43 ISIL militants have been killed during operations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and the western province of al-Anbar, security officials reported.

Seventeen Iraqi civilians were also killed in bomb attacks Wednesday.

Lieutenant General Rashid Felih, the head of operations in al-Anbar, said ISIL assaults were driven back by army troops and 43 insurgents, including senior commanders, were killed.

In Baghdad, 12 civilians were killed by a bomb-laden vehicle in the city center and another 50 wounded, police said.

In the city's Uveyric neighborhood, two bombs killed five and injured 21.

This year Iraq has suffered escalating ethnic violence that has seen the highest number of civilian deaths since 2005 and 2006, the worst years since the U.S.-led invasion.
