A Russian diplomat in Athens has died of seemingly pathological causes, Greek police have said Monday.

The head of the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Athens, Andrey Malanin, was found dead on his bedroom floor, on Monday afternoon according to a Greek police spokeswoman.

Early evidence suggests that the cause of his death was pathological, however the investigation is still ongoing, police told Anadolu Agency.

A coroner’s report to confirm the cause of death is expected in the following days.

A consulate employee found the diplomat’s body at 5.41 p.m. (1541GMT), in Malanin’s apartment, located on the third floor of a five-story building in the center of Athens accommodating Consulate employees, police said.

Malanin was 55 years old.
