Turkey’s lahmacun apply for EU geographical brand

Turkey’s lahmacun -- a flatbread topped with mince, vegetables and herbs -- has applied in the European Union to be registered as a geographical indication, a commodity exchange said on Friday.

In a written statement, Gaziantep Commodity Exchange said it started the procedure for the registration of southern Gaziantep’s lahmacun in the EU as a geographical indication.

On 2017, Gaziantep’s lahmacun was registered as geographical indication by Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.

The statement also recalled other Turkish products -- Antep baklava, Aydin fig and Malatya apricot -- which were registered in the EU.

“At the first stage, we applied for Antep lahmacun. In the forthcoming days, we will finalize our applications in the EU for our other products,” Ozgur Bayram, the secretary general of Gaziantep Commodity Exchange, said in the statement.
