Fernando Botero, who had been receiving treatment at a medical center in the Principality of Monaco for some time due to health problems, died a few days after being transferred to his home at his request, according to national media reports.
It was stated that Botero had respiratory problems due to pneumonia in recent days.
"Fernando Botero, painter of our traditions and vices, painter of our virtues, painter of violence and peace, has died," Colombian President Gustavo Petro, X in a post on his social media account.
"My father died at the age of 91 and in a way we expected it. He had an extraordinary life and he passed away at the right time. He went very peacefully, that's what matters. God knows how he did his work," Botero's daughter Lina Botero said.
The Medellin Mayor's Office announced a 7-day mourning period in the city due to Botero's death.
