Jihadist group Al-Shabaab attacks troop base in Somalia

The AU force, known as ATMIS, announced on Friday that Islamist Al-Shabaab troops attacked an African Union military base in Somalia. It is not known if there were any casualties.

The AU force said in posts on Facebook and Twitter that an army base 120 km southwest of the capital Mogadishu had been "attacked by Al-Shabaab", The New Arab reported.

"ATMIS forces are currently assessing the security situation," it said, without giving details.

TARGETED UGANDAN SOLDIERS

The Uganda People's Defense Forces said in a statement that the attack targeted Ugandan soldiers in Somalia as part of ATMIS.

AL-SHABAAB CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY

Al-Shabaab said it had overrun the base and claimed responsibility for Friday's attack.

But the Somali military said the attacks had been repelled and "the situation is now back to normal".
