Russia says it killed 250 Ukrainian soldiers to quell counterattack

As Ukraine's months-long-awaited counter-attack began, Russian troops said they had repulsed it, killing 250 Ukrainian soldiers. However, there is no information to substantiate the Kremlin's claims.

The Russian Defense Ministry said early Monday that 250 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and tanks destroyed in Kyiv's long-awaited counteroffensive.

Russia says it thwarted a major Ukrainian offensive on the eastern Donetsk region, but it is not yet known whether this was the start of Ukraine's long-awaited counteroffensive.

UKRAINIAN OFFENSIVE REPULSED

The Defense Ministry in Moscow released a video saying it had repulsed a "large-scale" Ukrainian offensive at five points in Donetsk in the early morning.

"The enemy's goal was to break through our defenses in the most vulnerable, in its opinion, sector of the front," said the ministry's spokesman, Igor Konashenkov. "The enemy did not achieve its tasks. It had no success."

Konashenkov claimed 250 Ukrainian personnel were killed, and 16 Ukrainian tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles and 21 armored combat vehicles were destroyed.

However, there is no information to confirm the Kremlin's claims.

NO COMMENT FROM UKRAINE

Ukraine has not yet commented. But as before, it may be waiting for the operation to be completed to justify its actions. That is why it is practicing news blackouts.

It is not clear why it waited until Monday morning to announce the attack, which the Russian Defense Ministry says began on Sunday morning.

WHEN WILL THE ATTACK AGAINST UKRAINE TAKE PLACE?

There has been talk of Kyiv's plan to launch a counteroffensive since Ukraine invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year.

But they've given mixed signals about what would constitute a counteroffensive -- preliminary, limited attacks to weaken Russian forces and military facilities or a full-fledged simultaneous assault across the entire 1,100-kilometer front line, euronews reported.

A social media campaign launched by Ukraine on Sunday called for silence on military planning.

PLANS LOVE SILENCE

"Plans love silence," the short video clip said, showing Ukrainian military personnel putting their fingers to their lips. "There will be no announcement about the start," read a caption in Ukrainian.

The timing of the counter-attack awaited improved ground conditions after the winter, the supply of more advanced Western weapons and the training of Ukrainian troops to use them.
