The European Automobile Manufacturers Association(ACEA) announced new car registration data for European Union(EU) countries for August. According to the data, new car sales in EU countries increased by 21 percent last month compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 787 thousand 626. New car registrations in Union member countries increased by 17.9 percent in January-August 2023 compared to the same period last year, rising to 7 million 78 thousand 464.
ELECTRIC CAR SALES SURPASSED DIESEL CAR SALES
In August, 32.7 percent of new cars sold in the EU were petrol, 23.9 percent hybrid, 21 percent fully electric, 12.5 percent diesel, 7.4 percent plug-in hybrid and 2.5 percent other fuels.
Thus, the share of electric cars in total sales in EU countries exceeded 20 percent for the first time and surpassed diesel cars. Electric car sales increased by 118.1 percent in August compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 165 thousand.
The number of electric cars sold since the beginning of this year has reached 984,864. Car sales increased by 37.3 percent in Germany, 24.3 percent in France, and 11.9 percent in Italy in August compared to the same period last year.
MOST NEW CARS ON ROAD IN GERMANY
According to the manufacturers, VW Group realized the highest number of new car sales in the EU in August 209 thousand 548. VW Group was followed by Stellantis Group in new vehicle sales in the EU. Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen, and Opel, sold 131 thousand 532 cars. Renault Group ranked third with 74 thousand 879 new cars and Hyundai Group ranked fourth with 66 thousand 33 units.
