Princess Diana's famous sweater, which was auctioned by Sotheby's Auction House in New York on August 31 with a sales estimate of 50 thousand to 80 thousand dollars, was sold for 1.14 million dollars.
The identity of the winner of the auction, where bids were placed online, was not disclosed.
The sweater, found in a loft in March, fetched a higher price than many other items linked to Princess Diana sold at auction in recent years.
Princess Diana wore this iconic jumper to a polo match in June 1981, weeks before her marriage to Charles, then Prince of Wales. The design of the sweater was described as a symbol of Diana's place in the Royal family.
Princess Diana, who was constantly followed by the British tabloid press, died in a traffic accident in a tunnel in Paris on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36 while being followed by paparazzi.
Diana's lover Dodi Al Fayed and his driver Henri Paul were also killed in the accident.
