Warning to 'single men' from University of Colorado researchers: Twice as likely to die from heart failure

A new study led by a group of researchers at the University of Colorado compiled data from 6,800 US adults and compared the odds of survival of those with heart failure with their marital status. Single men were twice as likely to die from heart failure than married men.

So why is there such a difference between married and single men? According to the researchers, married men are less likely to die because they have a relative who monitors their health. Because single men are generally thought to have no relatives who follow their health.

While it was stated that single people were in the group with a higher risk of death, another interesting detail emerged in the study: Men who were widowed, divorced, or separated after marriage continued to be affected by the protective aspect of marriage.

NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WOMEN

Researchers looked at the odds of both married and single women dying from heart failure. Unlike men, no such trend was detected in women. According to experts, the reason for this is that women already pay attention to their health.

In the University of Colorado study, the team recommended that doctors ask about their marital status when treating patients with heart failure. The leader of the study, Dr. Katarina Leyba said, “Staying single for life is an important predictor of death in men, but not in women. As clinicians, we need to think about our patients not only in terms of medical risk factors, but also in terms of their living conditions. "There is a correlation between a person's relationship status and the clinical course of heart failure."
