Former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides was elected as Cyprus' next president on Sunday. New president received 51.92 percent of the vote, while his opponent, supported by the leftist party AKEL, remained at 48.09 percent.

Former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides was elected as Cyprus' next president on Sunday, Al Jazeera reported.

Christodoulides, 49, received 51.92 percent of the vote, while his opponent, supported by the leftist party AKEL, remained at 48.09 percent.

With just 15,041 votes difference, Christodoulieds won.

"A long but beautiful journey has come to an end tonight," said Mavroyiannis, a former chief negotiator in peace talks with the Turkish Cypriots, admitting defeat.

“It gave me the opportunity to meet thousands of people and hope and dreams for our country.”
