Poland ready to meet with Türkiye to support "war" reparations

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Mularczyk said that his country requested compensation from Germany for the losses suffered in the Second World War and that a report was prepared on this subject. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk stated that his country requested compensation from Germany for the losses suffered in the Second World War and that a report was prepared on this subject and said, "We discussed the methodology behind our war report with the countries in Ukraine and Europe. Various discussions continue on this issue. Our channels are open and we would be happy to talk about this issue with the authorities from Türkiye."

Mularczyk evaluated the work done by the Warsaw administration regarding the compensation demanded from Germany. Emphasizing that, besides Poland, countries such as Italy and Greece are continuing their efforts to explain that they have the right to seek compensation and reparation from Germany, Mularczyk said that they will continue to bring together experts to discuss possible legal ways and improve the work done.

CONTINUE WORK ON COMPENSATION

Mularczyk stated that they are planning future conferences to discuss the compensation issue and that their international efforts will continue. Pointing out that the current work of Poland can directly benefit Ukraine's future lawsuits against Russia, Mularczyk said, "What is happening in Ukraine right now - senseless killing of civilians, kidnapping of children, theft of resources, total destruction of cities - what happened to Poland during Second World War period. Our discussion is directly relevant today. I want to emphasize that this is not a hypothetical practice, it is real and will have real implications."

Mularczyk stated that compensation was requested from Germany due to the losses suffered in the Second World War and that a report was prepared on this subject and said, "We discussed the methodology behind our war report with the countries in Ukraine and Europe. Various discussions are ongoing on this issue. Our communication channels with Türkiye are open, and we would be happy to talk about this issue with the authorities from Türkiye.”

CITIZENS SUPPORT

Drawing attention to the results of the report prepared last year, at the time of its publication and this year's opinion polls, Mularczyk emphasized that Polish citizens support the government's efforts.

Mularczyk stated that they also received the support of the parties in the Polish parliament and continued as follows:

"If the Polish Constitutional Court decides on May 10 that Poles can make individual claims against the German state, we expect interest to increase as people consider making claims. The importance of reparations for Poland is felt by every family in Poland and by the Polish diaspora abroad. Although World War II ended decades ago, the effects of this war are still seen and felt today. The sense of injustice we feel today will continue to be part of the internal debate in Poland until the issue of reparations is resolved."

Recalling his visit to the USA in February, Mularczyk said that he was very pleased with the interest shown by the US congress members. Mularczyk stated that he held a series of meetings with senators and representatives in the USA and explained his goals, and said:

"Many of them were hearing our claims for the first time. We are in contact with US politicians and would like to advance a bipartisan resolution regarding Polish compensation claims that we hope will be adopted in the United States. A letter to every member of Congress since our US visit outlining our position and asking for support. We have sent over 500 letters so far. We have received feedback from some members of Congress and we are continuing discussions. Also, the Polish American Congress and the Polish American Strategic Initiative in the US have done a lot of work behind the scenes to lobby US politicians and build grassroots support. In short, we hope that we can establish effective links with the United States to tell the history and experiences of Poland during World War II and to attract the attention of the very large and very influential Polish diaspora."

Mularczyk said, "We have been working very seriously on war reparations since the beginning of this year. Internationally, governments, international organisations, the Polish diaspora and individuals around the world are starting to understand our position. Compared to last year, the international media is writing much more about our demands. On this basis, we hope that our campaign will be much stronger than it was at the end of 2022."
