China and the Philippines have conflicting sovereignty claims in the disputed South China Sea, where tensions continue between their maritime neighbours.

China claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, with a "nine-striped line" on maps stretching more than 1,500km from its mainland and cutting through the exclusive economic zones of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia.

The Philippines accuses the Chinese coast guard of "dangerous maneuvers" and "offensive tactics" in the South China Sea.

This went down in history as yet another naval conflict between the two countries at a time when geopolitical tensions were boiling.

'DANGEROUS MANEUVERS MADE'

The incident occurred during a Philippine coast guard patrol near Second Thomas Shoal in the Philippines on Sunday.

The coast guard said the two Chinese vessels were "acting aggressively" and posing "a significant threat to the safety and security of the Philippine ship and its crew".

One of the two Chinese ships was said to have made "dangerous maneuvers" about 150 feet from a Philippine ship.
