Qatar does not want Syria in the Arab League

As a result of the meeting in Cairo, Syria gained the right to join the Arab League again by collecting the votes. But Qatar says its stance against this 'conditional' return has been 'unchanged' due to strained relations in the Syrian civil war.

Qatar does not want Syria in the Arab League

On Sunday, the Arab League decided to accept Syria's membership "conditionally" after 12 years. But Qatar has said its stance on normalizing relations with the Syrian regime has been "unchanged".

“The official position of the State of Qatar on normalization with the Syrian regime is a decision linked primarily to progress in the political solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed bin Mohammad al-Ansari said in statements carried by state news agency QNA.

“Qatar always seeks to support achieving Arab consensus and will not be an obstacle to that,” he added.

CIVIL WAR HAD STRAINED RELATIONS

According to Anadolu reported, the main reason why Qatar does not want Syria to join the Arab League is the civil war that broke out in 2011 and Bashar Assad's stance on this issue.

BOYCOTT OF QATAR CONTINUES

According to statements made by the Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, last month, Qatar's boycott of the Syrian regime continues.

Qatar aspires to “work with the Arab brothers to achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people for dignity, peace, development and prosperity,” al-Ansari said.

Qatar is hopeful of “this consensus to be a motive for the Syrian regime to address the roots of the crisis that led to its boycott and take positive steps towards addressing the issues of the Syrian people,” he added.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Before the annual Arab Summit held on May 19, Syria's decision to re-transfer to the Arab League came to the fore.

Syria was suspended by 22 states in 2011 for its brutal stance in the civil war.

Recently, however, Syria has begun to reallocate relations that had been broken by its visits to Arab countries.
