A new development took place at the COP16 meeting, which is planned to be hosted by Türkiye in 2024.

According to the UN, the meeting, which was previously decided to be held in Antalya, was postponed due to the earthquakes in Türkiye.

In the statement made by the UN, it was emphasized that Türkiye regretted taking the decision to withdraw from hosting the meeting planned to be held until November 2024.

Türkiye was expected to preside over the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity between 2024 and 2026, and to take over the COP16, which will be held in Türkiye in 2024, from China.

In addition, in the statement made, it was informed that offers will be made to candidate countries to undertake hosting.

It is based on a historical consensus reached in the 2022 talks, aiming to save the world's lands, oceans and living species from the climate crisis and its effects.

More than 190 countries have signed the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, which is reminiscent of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The contract, which includes commitments to secure 30 percent of the planet as a protected zone by 2030, was signed after the difficult pandemic process.
