Islamic countries condemned the so-called presidential elections held by the Armenian separatists occupying a part of Nagorno-Karabakh and called on the international community to take necessary measures.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) emphasized international law and said that the election was a violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), on the other hand, stated that the action undermined peace and stability in the region. On the other hand, following Türkiye and Azerbaijan, Pakistan also condemned the so-called elections. Previously, the European Union (EU) and Ukraine had also reacted to the Armenian side over the elections.

One-sided legitimization effort

Samvel Shahramanyan was elected President in the elections held recently in the "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic", which according to international law belongs to Azerbaijan and is not recognized by any country, including Armenia. In a written statement released by the OIC on the issue, it was stated that the organization sees the so-called elections held in Karabakh "as a new manifestation of efforts to unilaterally legitimize the current situation in the region".

The statement described the so-called elections held during the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks as "a move to undermine the talks" and noted that this step violated United Nations Security Council resolutions, OIC resolutions, principles of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and international law.

‘Stop Armenia’

"The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation does not recognize these illegitimate elections, which constitute a violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and calls on the UN and the international community not to recognize it and to take effective measures to prevent Armenia from taking steps in this direction,” calling on the international community not to recognize the so-called elections, the OIC statement said.
