The war between Russia and Ukraine is an existential threat to Europe, said Josep Borell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

"This war has profound consequences for the whole world. It may not seem so to everyone in the world, but for us Europeans, this war is an existential threat," Borell said.

European Union (EU) foreign ministers met for the first time in Kyiv.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made a statement on the social media platform X, stating that he convened EU foreign ministers for the first time in one of the non-member countries.

"The future of Ukraine is in the EU," Borell emphasized.

Addressing a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign MinisterDmytro Kuleba at the entrance of the informal meeting, Borrell said that the ministers would discuss the latest situation regarding the war and the support to Ukraine.

Borrell emphasized that the ministers of all member states showed their determination to support Ukraine by meeting in Kyiv.

He said that he was sure that this decision would be re-evaluated, adding that United States officials he met with also wanted to continue support.

On September 19, the High Representative announced that the next meeting of ministers would be held in Kyiv, but no details were given for security reasons.
